Today I’m excited to formally announce the first home away from home release of 2025, missgene’s debut album penpal on limited run cassette and digital download.

Two tracks are available to stream now on Bandcamp, 030.693 44 14 (we've just been calling this one ‘numbers’) and randomgenes.
“At its core, penpal is a meditation on home—not just as a place, but as a feeling. It captures the bittersweet reality of maintaining bonds across physical and emotional spaces, from the quiet rhythm of exchanging messages like postcards to the long silences between shared moments and the profound resonance of absence in long-distance friendships.”
I can hear so many different musical identities on penpal. There’s pure lush new-age euphoria; frenetic synth sequences and outbursts of piano that remind me of 80’s outsider & proto-dance music; the hi-tech meets low-tech digi trance of ‘randomgenes’; as well as the references to Steve Reich’s phasing experiments on ‘oneofthemgottodessup’. It's a varied album, but each track adds to the sum of its parts.
Penpal prints & cassette
There's a limited run of 50 penpal tapes with stock available to pre-order over on the home away from home Bandcamp. We unfortunately don't have these on hand yet due to a postal service strike in Canada over the holidays but they're on frosted white cassette shells and will look so sick. We also have a small run of prints featuring artwork by Jayke Maddison. Handmade by missgene, each set includes three prints on high quality card stock: 1 x print on 90gsm premium kraft paper, 1 x print on 112gsm semi-translucent vellum, and 1 x print on 300gsm premium mist silver card. There are 15 of these print sets available over on Bandcamp.
