Spanning eight tracks, Penpal fluidly combines the introspective tones of nu-new age emo ambient with the dubbed-out, DIY proto-dance sounds of the late ’80s. Grand piano voice memo recordings are Paulstretch’d to infinity, intertwined with FM synths and drum machine bursts that channel the weightless, post-techno energy of Barker, as if rediscovered on a grainy VHS of a once-lost late-night public access broadcast.

The album opens with textured synth and noise layers that evolve into lush, Global Communication-style sequences. ‘randomgenes’ converts the record into the present with tech-infused ambience that hovers above a driving drum machine, offering Penpal’s most danceable moment. A minimalist, neo-classical thread runs through the record—‘oneofthemgottodressup’ nods to Steve Reich’s phasing compositions, while the title track and ‘030.693 44 14’ recall the orchestral grandeur of his 1970s works. The emotive, improvisational piano on ‘hardtoeat’ emerges from ambient clouds and resurfaces in the closing track, ‘theresapianointhekitchen.’
